SEVERE WEATHER AWARNESS WEEK was observed February 5-9, 2024

Florida Severe Weather Awareness Week is observed each year by the National Weather Service and Florida Division of Emergency Management to increase awareness of and preparedness for severe weather hazards.

It's is a great opportunity to learn about & prepare for  natural hazards that impact Florida.

Follow the tips to be prepared before the next storm hits at:  FloridaDisaster.org/PlanPrepare.

  • First day focus was on lightning! If you can hear thunder, you can be struck by lightning. Florida is the Lightning Capital of the U.S., with an average of 285 lightning events per square mile occurring in 2022.  Learn more at: https://www.floridadisaster.org/hazards/lightning/
  • Second day focus was on marine hazards and rip currents. On an average year, rip currents claim the lives of more Floridians than hurricanes, tornadoes & lightning combined. Learn more at: https://www.floridadisaster.org/hazards/marine/
  • Third day focus was on thunderstorms and tornadoes. When storms develop, they can produce lightning, damaging winds & tornadoes. To protect yourself, seek shelter inside away from windows. Learn more at: https://www.floridadisaster.org/hazards/thunderstorms/  and https://www.floridadisaster.org/hazards/tornadoes/
  • Fourth day focus was on hurricanes and flooding! Hurricanes bring many hazards including flooding, storm surge & tornadoes. No other state has more hurricane landfalls than FL, & our unique location makes FL especially prone to flooding. Learn more at:  https://www.floridadisaster.org/hazards/hurricanes/  and https://www.floridadisaster.org/hazards/floods/
  • Fifth day focus was on temperature extremes and wildfires!  Severe cold outbreaks occur in Florida at least once a year.
