Planning for future improvements to several popular areas moves forwardAt this past Monday's Town Council meeting, Councilors received updates from the firm DRMP, Inc., which was contracted several months ago to design improvements to Times Square, Bay Oaks, and Bayside Park.Current design status was given by representatives for DRMP for each of these areas. Approval was given by Town Council to progress from 60 to 100 percent design for Times Square and from 30 to 100 percent design for Bay Oaks and Bayside Park. DRMP will return to a future Town Council meeting with more detailed plans. Mayor Ray Murphy thanked the members of the Bay Oaks Recreational Campus Advisory Board (BORCAB) for their foresight in encouraging the Town to consider large-scale improvements to Bay Oaks. “We will be forever grateful for all of the work that you’ve accomplished to date regarding the redevelopment of Bay Oaks,” said Mayor Murphy. “Every successive council from here on out and all the people that are going to enjoy that will have you to thank for bringing it forward.” Town Council recently approved funding for all three of these projects in the form of a $10 million loan. This loan is provided for in the Fiscal Year 2021 budget and already scheduled for full repayment in 2021, even with this year's budget keeping the same millage rate at .95 and the levels of Town services remaining the same. Watch the presentation about these projects from the Town Council Meeting on YouTube. The discussion begins at approximately 1 hour:18 minutes. In other business at the meeting on Monday, Town Councilors authorized repairs to Newton Beach Cottage, estimated at $56,800, to be performed by International Fine Art Conservation Studios, Inc.

Apply to be a member of the newly-created Nuisance Abatement Board
Interested in serving on Town Council's newly-created Nuisance Abatement Board? Town Council members are seeking applicants who are residents of Fort Myers Beach to fill the seven positions on the board.
To apply, fill out the Advisory Committee Application and return it to Town Hall, 2525 Estero Boulevard, Fort Myers Beach, 33931. The Town Clerk's office can be contacted at 239-765-0202 to answer questions.
Town Council created this board by approval of Ordinance 20-13 at its meeting on September 21. The board's purpose is to promote, protect, and improve the health, safety and welfare of residents by providing an equitable and effective method to reduce the use of property within the Town for the unlawful sale or delivery of: - controlled substances
- prostitution
- youth and street gang activity
- gambling
- illegal sale or consumption of alcoholic beverages
- lewd or lascivious behavior
Members will be appointed by Town Council to three-year terms. The ordinance calls for seven members who must be residents. Each of the five Town Councilors are to appoint a member. The remaining two members are to be appointed collectively for "at large" positions.
One member is required to be a licensed attorney in good standing with the Florida bar, and one member is recommended to be a retired law enforcement officer.

New Year's Eve fireworks display unlikely The Town's annual fireworks display planned for New Year's Eve will likely be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the cost of displaying the fireworks in a way that encourages social distancing.
At Monday's Town Council meeting, Councilors considered the cost from the fireworks vendor to launching fireworks from a barge in the Gulf so that crowds could social distance on the seven miles of beach instead of jamming into Times Square and the downtown area.
The additional $25,000 cost of this option was deemed prohibitive. Councilors set a $15,000 cap for a counter proposal for the barge option. Alternatively, the Town will pay a little more than $4,000 for the vendor to store the fireworks to be used some time later in 2021.
